However, at Palisades Dental Care, we use this term to describe procedures that are meant to improve your smile and boost your confidence. A flawless smile and strong, healthy teeth are critical for a variety of reasons, including appearance and health.
Your smile is the first thing people see. Therefore, you want it to be perfect. If it’s not, your confidence may be affected. Not only that, but dental issues also impact your oral and your overall health.
At Palisades Dental Care in Dumont, New Jersey, we offer several cosmetic dental procedures to restore your smile’s aesthetics and functionality. Who Needs Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry can fix several dental issues, including:
  • Chipped/cracked teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Tooth staining/discoloration
  • Misshapen or misaligned teeth
As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, cosmetic dental treatments are an option. If you have tooth decay and/or gum disease, that will need to be addressed first. After those issues have been handled, we can explore cosmetic procedures.
Research shows that 96% of cosmetic dentistry patients are female. The most common age groups are:
  • 31 to 40: 38%
  • 41 to 50: 32%

Types of Cosmetic Dental Procedures

If you do not have any underlying dental issues, and the dental team feels cosmetic dentistry is an appropriate option for you, we can explore your options. In most cases, dental insurance will not cover the cost of cosmetic procedures because they are not medically necessary. Still, our friendly office staff will work with your insurance provider to determine coverage.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are sometimes referred to as a “smile makeover” because they are thin shells that fit over your teeth to improve their appearance. Porcelain veneers are the most common because they look the most like natural teeth.
Approximately 26% of cosmetic dental procedures involve veneers. There are several reasons patients choose veneers over other treatments:
  • Change appearance of teeth (size, length, color, shape)
  • Fix chipped/cracked/broken teeth
  • Fix streaks on teeth
  • Hide stains/discolorations

Veneers are often recommended for patients who have had root canals or crowns to protect the teeth from fracture. Veneers are only placed on front teeth, rarely on premolars, and never on molars.

The cost of dental veneers depends on how many you get, and the material used. The most popular choice is porcelain because they look the most natural.

Teeth Whitening

Over time, your teeth may become stained due to a variety of reasons: natural aging, consuming dark-colored foods/beverages, certain medications, and more. Professional teeth whitening can lighten these stains and brighten your smile. When considering whitening options, discuss your goals with our dental team to determine the best course of action, as not everyone sees the same results.
The effectiveness depends on the type of stains you have:
  • Intrinsic: inside the teeth
  • Extrinsic: surface stains
While you can opt for at-home treatments, in-office procedures are typically more effective. These will cost more but will be worth it in the long run.
Before moving forward with teeth whitening, our dental team will examine your mouth and take note of any issues that could impact the process. We will also discuss an allergies or sensitivities you may have.
When it comes to teeth whitening, there is a broad cost range, depending on what method you choose. However, in most cases, you will get what you pay for. Typically, the more you pay, the more effective it will be and the longer it will last. Dr. Kryzman and Dr. Small can help you decide which one would work best for you.
Teeth Straightening​

Teeth Straightening

At Palisades Dental Care, we offer both traditional braces and Invisalign clear aligners to treat malocclusion. These are orthodontic treatments, so they may be partially covered by dental insurance.
Both traditional braces and clear aligners put pressure on your teeth to push them into their appropriate position within the jaw. Children and teens typically get traditional braces, while adults get clear aligners.
The cost of aligners versus traditional braces is comparable and depends on the duration of treatment and the complexity of the malocclusion. We can provide you with a specific quote during your consultation to help you decide which one to choose. Most dental insurance providers will cover a portion of traditional braces, but they may not always cover aligners. Our office staff will work with your provider to determine coverage.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that restores a damaged tooth to its original size, shape, and appearance. Crowns may be porcelain, metal, or a combination. There are several steps involved in getting a crown:
  • Tooth must be shaped/prepared
  • An impression made of the tooth
  • Temporary crown placed
  • Crown fabricated in the lab from the impression
  • Permanent crown fitted and cemented in place 
A dental crown is necessary if the affected tooth:
  • Is vulnerable to additional damage/infection
  • Causes pain during normal activities
  • Is unable to function like a normal tooth
  • Impacts your bite
  • Detracts from your smile
Dental crowns offer several benefits:
  • Restores shape/function of tooth
  • Improves appearance
  • Protects tooth from future damage
  • Allows for tooth structure to be kept as opposed to removing it and placing dental implants
The cost of a dental crown varies based on your dental insurance and the material used for the crown. Your dental insurance may cover up to half of the cost of dental crowns if the procedure is not purely cosmetic.

Tooth-colored Fillings

In the past, patients who had a cavity would get a silver amalgam filling. New advancements have led to tooth-colored fillings, which are made of a composite resin that can be customized to blend with the color of your natural tooth, so it’s not noticeable.
Tooth-colored fillings are used in the same way that other fillings are. The dentist will drill out the cavity from the tooth and then clean it. The resin will be placed in the hole. Tooth-colored fillings must be layered and allowed to cure between each one, so the process takes longer.
The cost of tooth-colored fillings depend on the size and number of teeth you need to have filled. Since this is not primarily a cosmetic procedure, dental insurance may cover at least a portion of it.
